Who Is Robert Smalls?
Robert Smalls was born in 1839 in Beaufort, South Carolina, to an enslaved woman and a white plantation owner In 1862, during the Civil War, he executed a escape by commandeering a Confederate ship, the Planter, and sailing it to freedom in Union waters, along with other enslaved individuals.
This audacious act not only showcased his bravery but also made him a national hero. Following the war, Smalls became a prominent political figure, five terms as a U.S. Congressman from South Carolina. He passionately advocated for civil rights, education, and economic opportunities for African Americans, leaving a lasting legacy as a champion of justice and equality. His remarkable journey from enslavement to founding the South Carolina Republican Party, his life continues to inspire many today.
